Total number of young people from the ages of 15 to 29 who live in the country: 2,409,064.

Percentage of young people in global population: 22%.

Public authorities - National public authorities

Ministry in charge of youth: Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs

Main tasks of the Youth department: The General Secretariat for Youth is under the auspices of the Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs and is responsible for planning and implementing the national’s youth policy. It has: Wide responsibility for the development of youth policy strategies and their implementation. Significant institutional status and functional continuity; Acceptance and recognition of its public and social role on youth issues; Ability to follow middle and long run planning and implementing of projects regarding the youth population; Ability to raise public funding for the support and completion of its goals.

Youth councils

The National Youth Council (ESYN)

The National Youth Council was established in July 1998, as a “platform” of NGYOs and is an independent, non-governmental, non-profit federation of Greek youth organisations. Today, 47 NGYOs constitute the National Youth Council, representing the vast majority of young people organised in youth organisations. The National Youth Council is the official representative of Greek youth abroad and the main interlocutor of the Hellenic Government on youth issues at the national level. It participates in the Organisational committee for the Youth Parliament, while it is a member of the European Youth Forum, the Mediterranean Youth Forum, the UNESCO Youth Council, the relevant U.N. Youth Bodies, etc.

National Programmes on youth

The General Secretariat for Youth implements programmes and projects such as: Youth Entrepreneurship Support Structures: they aim at encouraging and primarily supporting young entrepreneurs, informing them on the existing young entrepreneurs’ possibilities and the realisation of programmes or courses concerning Entrepreneurship. Duration: ongoing.

Action plans i.e. official strategies

National Action Plan “For a child-friendly Germany 2005-2010”. Main topics:

The General Secretariat for Youth plans and carries out social policy actions through informal learning initiatives (sensitise, up-date, inform), emphasising on young people with fewer opportunities.

Promoting volunteerism: Visiting Greece: The General Secretariat for Youth, in cooperation with the National Tourism Organization (EOT) initiates programmes of alternative tourism for young people aged 18-30. Duration: Annually renewed.
